Is That Mold You’re Eating?

Molds are microscopic fungi that can live on plant or animal matter. It is estimated that over 300,000 types of mold or fungi exist. Some molds cause health effects.
Other molds are safe to eat and are even considered delicacies. Here is a list of some of those foods:
Brie. Brie is a soft, creamy, buttery cheese that originated in France and is produced internationally. It has a creamy interior with a soft, bloomy, edible rind of white mold.
Blue Cheese. The mold on blue cheese is from the same family of spores used to make Penicillin, which makes it safe to eat. If you take it out of the fridge and notice that it's begun to develop fuzzy gray or black splotches of mold or is showing pink and yellow yeast spots, then it's time to ditch it.
Mushrooms. A mushroom is the reproductive structure produced by some fungi. It is somewhat like the fruit of a plant, except that the "seeds" it produces are in fact millions of microscopic spores that form in the gills or pores underneath the mushroom's cap.
You may enjoy eating brie, blue cheese, and mushrooms, but some mold that can be found in your property can cause respiratory illness. If you suspect mold growth in your property, give SERVPRO of Glen Burnie a call. We are here to help.
